The first storm was quite unexpected around noon as I only happened to know it was there cause I got woken up by a large clap of thunder and noticed on radar there was a fairly large cell that was about to roll in and was starting to line up a little so I grabbed my phone and tripod and luckily got there just in time to film. Nothing overly crazy as most of the heavy part of that storm did stay slightly to the North.
The 2nd storm which was about 2pm and about an hour later was part of a the main line of storm I was anticipating from the HRRR on the run the previous night. The first storm was just a bonus. Now this line while not impressive when it was over by Utica did start to get it's act together as it neared Albany and definitely points after it went by Albany. Went once again to the school to film and got some really nice video of the developing shelf cloud with it as it was moving over.
I usually don't try and go after the storms after they pass unless the backside looks amazing for filming like lightning but I was compelled by what I saw on radar so I went to one of my better filming spots at Hoffman Park just off I-787 that faces pretty much due East and has a good NE to SE orientation. Caught the entire back side of the now intensifying severe storm line and rain shafts 15 miles away. It was quite photogenic for the 20 mins I stayed there and just as I was about to leave I saw something you rarely see in Upstate NY....especially in September....Mammatus clouds. They were chilling high up in the anvil on the backside and some of them early on were some of level of mammatus I see storm chasing in the Midwest in June with my 2 friends. Those were there from about 235pm-245 pm and did get a good bit of footage before they dissipated.
Overall solid afternoon of storm filming. Not many more severe days like that this year....if any. :D Made it count.
Couple bucks on my Ko-Fi also goes a long way and is always helps. :) Again don't have to if you don't want to. :)
