Amazon wildfires an international crisis | The Drum

Amazon wildfires an international crisis | The Drum When the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris caught fire, the world knew within minutes, but it's taken much longer for news of devastating fires in Brazil's Amazon rainforest to make headlines.

The forest fires have hit a record number this year, with 72,843 detected so far by the Brazilian Government's National Institute for Space Research.

The surge marks an 83 per cent increase over the same period in 2018, INPE said, and is the highest since records began in 2013.
With the fires raging for more than three weeks now, concerns are growing over right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro's controversial environmental policy and his firing of INPE director Ricardo Galvao, reportedly amid rows over deforestation data it captured.

Ellen Fanning is joined by director of Western Sydney Women, Amanda Rose, author and columnist at the SMH Peter FitzSimons, executive director at the Cities Leadership Institute, Katherine O’Regan, senior lawyer at Human Rights Law Centre Lee Carnie and Prof. Bill Laurence from the Centre for Tropical, Environmental and Sustainability Science at James Cook University to discuss the fires.
