From computers to crayons, Canyons’ Director of Purchasing Gary Hansen has ordered it all. His No. 1 priority is to make sure that schools have what they need when they need. To be sure, it can be a tricky task, but with 40 years of experience buying everything from toilet paper to toothpicks, Hansen is up to the challenge. His reward is seeing students sitting in their new chairs and knowing his department made it happen. If Canyons District has it, there’s a good chance that Hansen and the Purchasing Department bought it. He fields requests for lawn mowers and snow blowers — and everything else — for all of Canyons schools and facilities, while also following government requirements for using public funds. Always in the back of his mind, Hansen considers how to make each dollar count, no matter the request, and he’s willing to help wherever he’s needed. Whether it’s setting up chairs for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at a new school or taking down tables at an event recognizing Canyons District’s teachers, Hansen is there, with his shirt-sleeves rolled up. Because Hansen has helped Canyons succeed in so many areas, from the construction of new schools to the purchasing of pencils, Canyons Board of Education is proud to select Gary Hansen as the 2019 Apex Award winner for Administrator of the Year.
