From 'naive' to 'outcast': UK reacts to Prince Andrew's retirement from public life

From 'naive' to 'outcast': UK reacts to Prince Andrew's retirement from public life Members of the public and media in the United Kingdom on Thursday reacted to the news of Prince Andrew's retirement from public engagements, following allegations he had sex with a 17-year-old girl procured for him by late U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein killed himself in a U.S. prison in August while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

The scandal involving Andrew, Queen Elizabeth's second son, who denies all allegations, escalated when Andrew did an interview with BBC TV, which aired on Saturday.

"I think if you understand the royal family you get he was trying to be very sincere but he was obviously, he was very naive," said London resident Anthony Hirsch, expressing his full support for the prince and the entire royal family.

The interview has drawn widespread criticism in the media, with many saying his explanations were unsatisfactory, while lawyers for Epstein's victims said the prince showed little sympathy for those abused.

"I definitely think he should apologise to the victims, to Epstein's victims. And of he did have anything to do with it then he should come clean," UK-born German tourist David Stainer said.
