Lawyer: 'significant rise' in Chinese entering UK

Lawyer: 'significant rise' in Chinese entering UK (25 Oct 2019) A British solicitor specialising in immigration says there has been a "significant rise" in Chinese nationals entering the UK and being exploited as victims of human trafficking in the past two years.

Sulaiha Ali, a public law solicitor at Duncan Lewis solicitors, told The Associated Press in an interview on Friday that the UK's immigration policies aid traffickers and people who exploit foreign nationals.

"They use the fact that the people they're exploiting have no status," she said, adding that the victims were "desperate" and fearful of returning to their home countries.

"They're using our own immigration policies against us by being able to ensure that these individuals don't try and escape," said Ali.

Her comments come as a lorry was found in Tilbury, Essex, with 39 bodies inside, all of whom were believed to be Chinese nationals.

Details about the victims, including where they were from, were scarce.

Ali said that the narrative around human trafficking needs to change and that the Home Office needs to be more aware of trafficking claims.
