Smog - A Human Rights Issue A thick blanket of toxic black smog engulfed Lahore all week

This year, Lahore’s Air Quality Index hit 800 an indication of severe levels of air pollution.

According to a 2015 report by Lancet 22% of annual deaths in Pakistan are caused mainly by air pollution. That is more than 310,000 lives lost. Another report by the World Bank attributes 5 million cases of illnesses among children to air pollution.

Pakistan has been ranked among the deadliest places in the world due to air pollution by WHO. With the health and lives of people at stake environmental activists are now calling smog and other forms of air pollution a violation of Pakistani citizens’ fundamental rights. People are now calling for the government to be proactive in addressing the causes of smog in Pakistan, and to provide medical
relief for victims of severely polluted air.
