Hi. Today's video is a little different from my usual videos. I have been quite disturbed with all the terrible crimes against women on the news all the time. What really disturbed me was the WhatsApp group formed by a group of seventh-grade boys in a Mumbai school where they boasted about wanting to rape their classmates. Boys talking like that isn't new. But it is nonetheless deeply disturbing. What can we as parents do to raise boys to become respectful of women? Every acid attacker and rapist was once an innocent boy. The mystery behind why an innocent boy transforms into an entitled beast is far from solved. But lack of good role models, poor societal examples of respectful behavior, our movie actors being nightmarish heroes filled with misogyny and witnessing domestic violence as a child are just a few of the reasons. How we raise our children, the modes of discipline used and open communication at home right from a young age also contribute to how our boys grow up to gentle, compassionate and empathetic.
