This method of painting with a "monochromatic palette" is a great way to take your art to the next level. It allows you to keep your focus on VALUE rather than COLOR. Simply choose different values (lightness to darkness) in the same color family (about 5 to 7 different values), and then create a painting from a reference photo that you convert to black and white.
I'm always amazed at how this technique improves my ability to see value and create a stronger paintings in the future. Give it a try!
