The government has warned that the spread of coronavirus is now considered to be a ‘serious and imminent threat’ to the British public. As of this morning, 908 people have died of the virus in China where it originated. With the death toll climbing, here’s what you need to know about the confirmed coronavirus cases on the UK. How many people in the UK have coronavirus? There are currently eight people in the UK who have been diagnosed with coronavirus. The four new patients were all contacts of a businessman who was diagnosed in Brighton last week and who contracted the virus at a conference in Singapore. The man who caught the virus in Singapore and the other new patients are all being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Royal Free hospitals in London. This person is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London. On Thursday, the third UK case was confirmed – with this patient being the Brighton businessman – and the first two cases in England were diagnosed in York. It is understood that the first two patients – who are family members – travelled to the UK from China recently and have undergone treatment at the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary. Advertisement Advertisement ‘The new cases are all known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France. ‘Experts at Public Health England continue to work hard tracing patient contacts from the UK cases. They successfully identified these individuals and ensured the appropriate support was provided. ‘The patients have been transferred to specialist NHS centres at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and The Royal Free hospitals, and we are now using robust infection control measures to prevent further spread of the virus. ‘The NHS is extremely well prepared to manage these cases and treat them, and we are working quickly to identify any further contacts these patients have had.’ To view this video please enable Java
