Hi, my name is Maggie. This is the story of how my school camera caught me doing something illegal. I had to slap another girl to get out of this situation, but it all unraveled in a way I didn't expect.
I don’t really know how to say it much more nicely than this… but I grew up as a loser. In high school, people weren’t nice to me. I was desperate to make friends. One day, I logged online and saw that Katie, one of the popular girls, posted a photo of a purse. The caption said: “I’d love anyone who got this for me!” I know this sounds kinda pathetic, but I went and found the purse. I look really innocent, so I knew I’d get away with it. I stuffed the purse in my shirt and rushed out of the store. I felt a rush of adrenaline.
The next day, I gave Katie the purse at school in front of all of her friends. She. Flipped. Out. Soon, all the popular kids wanted to be around me. They kept asking me if I could get them stuff. They wanted purses, watches, jewelry… anything expensive I could get my hands on. That’s when my plan came to be. I know you shouldn’t buy people's affection. But I wasn’t! I was just showing them that I was cool, you know? I started going to the mall every night. I would pick up every expensive item I could fit in my sweater and run out of the store.
Then, I started running into some problems. There were security tags on everything! I started ducking behind displays and stuffing things in my purse…but how was I supposed to get them out with the tags on them?! I took a shirt and pretended I needed to try it on in the dressing room. I started trying to wrestle the security tag off, but it was taking forever! Finally, I felt it starting to loosen…just as the clerk started banging on the door, asking if I was okay.
I told her I was fine…and that’s when it happened. The tag EXPLODED all over me! How had I been so dumb?! I didn’t know it was an ink security tag! I was drenched in bright blue ink from head to toe. It was on my skin! My clothes! Everything! I pulled on my jacket and tried to cover myself as best as I could. How was I supposed to get out of here?! I ditched all the expensive items under the bench in the room and I ran out. In 3 seconds, I was out of the store and the mall. I watched from my car as the security guards started swarming the store. My heart was pounding!
You would think that would’ve stopped me…but I just started going to stores without tags, on the other side of the mall. In one of my usual stores, the cashier was crying. I realized she was getting fired. “Too many things have gone missing on your shift,” the manager said. I felt my heart sink. She was gettfing fired… because of me? I knew I couldn’t do this anymore. I rushed to school to get all the stolen stuff out of my locker. There was no way I was going to come clean, but I thought maybe if I could hide everything in the store somewhere, the manager would think it was a mistake.
I started taking stuff out of my locker and people swarmed around me. Every kid I’d ever wanted to be friends with was standing beside me, asking what I had for them.
“Did you get my game system?”
“That watch I wanted?!”
My head was spinning, and I started to panic. I couldn’t tell them they weren't for them. I’d be the loser again! So… I started handing out everything. I felt like I was Oprah doing a giveaway. Finally, my locker was empty, and everyone disappeared. Everyone, except my brother. He pointed up to the camera in the hall and said: “You know they review that every day, right?” I couldn’t get caught like this! I’d get expelled or go to jail. I realized I had to do something bad ASAP to get into the principal's office and get that footage. So, I walked up to a girl I didn’t know in the hall...
