US presidential election 'will be won on anti-establishment perceptions'

US presidential election 'will be won on anti-establishment perceptions' An anti-establishment "mood" helped contribute to Donald Trump's demanding presidential victory in 2016, and that same sentiment will play a crucial role among voters in the upcoming US election, according to the Lowy Institute's Sam Roggeveen.

Mr Roggeveen told Sky News he believes the "mood is still very much anti-establishment," among western democracies "generally".

"I think that's why Brexit succeeded ... [and] I think that's why populist candidates, populist parties have done so well in western Europe".

"And I think that's why Donald Trump did as well as he did in 2016".

Mr Roggeveen said among the Democratics, the candidate who had "the clearest anti-establishment credentials" is Bernie Sanders.

Conversely, Mr Roggeveen said he believed Joe Biden is perceived as a "Washington insider" who "represents an establishment that I think so many Americans feel has let them down".

Mr Roggeveen said his "sense is that Trump would still be a strong favourite for re-election".
