For months, the government has been trying to look for new guidelines on conscription waivers, but said that the Military Manpower Administration and the Ministry of National Defense were inclined to downsize the overall scope of exemption. Under the existing law on military service exemption, prize winners of certain contests, mostly Western classical and Korean traditional music events, or athletes who won any Olympic medals or Asian Games gold medals can be exempted from military services. However, on February 8th, a government affiliate said respective ministries would at least try excavating ways to easily permit conscription candidates with overseas travel.
