RuPaul Charles, America's most famous drag queen, was abandoned by his father as a child. He says it was an experience he couldn't let go. RuPaul tell us it was drag that finally set him free. Standing about 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 metres) and wearing elaborate makeup and gowns, RuPaul gained much recognition on the New York club scene. RuPaul was born RuPaul Andre Charles on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. RuPaul was the only boy of his parents’ four children, and eventually began wearing his sisters’ clothes and exploring cross-dressing RuPaul eventually took hi persona to stages in Atlanta and New York with bands and as a dancer. He became part of the burgeoning drag scene, performing in clubs as a dancer and appearing at the annual Wigstock festival. In the early 1990s, he landed a record contract and released his first album, Supermodel of the World, while also starting a career in acting. On the strength of his TV shows, including RuPaul's Drag Race, and his oversized personality, RuPaul has become a beacon in gay, drag and transsexual communities. Drag, according to RuPaul, applies to us all, regardless of gender, race or social background. It’s how we choose to show ourselves to the world, what personas we adopt as we move through life. “Why not make it work for you,” he said to Oprah Winfrey. “If you have the power to control how people see and interpret you, why not use it?” Can I get an amen?
