Casting a conventional reel off of the beach and pier will get your bait out far distances for big drum (redfish), sharks, cobia, and other big fish in the surf. Many people get intimidated with a conventional reel or "heaver" but it will allow farther casts and more fish. This is especially popular in places like the Outer Banks, Texas, Montauk, and places where fishing off of points, surf, and beach fishing is all about distance.
