On Korean new years, each member of the family bows to their elder. The wife bows to her husband, the younger siblings to their older siblings. Korean new years is a very solemn time of deep respect. No hugs, just honor and admiration. Words of wisdom are spoken from the elder and it’s customary for the elders to give money as a gift. Words of encouragement, wisdom, caution, and advice for the upcoming new year are given from each older person to the younger. [Joe] I remember as a kid, my family would spend all New Years day traveling to gather with our relatives. To be honest, I don’t remember much, but I do remember how everyone came dressed up and eager to hear endearing words from their elders.
My korean heritage comes from a lot of stoicism and reserved emotions. And it’s not to say it’s a negative thing..It’s just different. Where some people may see it as being quiet, still, and emotionless, I see it as being meek, supportive, and loyal.
So, our family is going to pay tribute to one another. This is the first year we’re celebrating seollal, the Korean New Years Day.
Romans 12:9-13 ESV
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
