Moon Scenery on Earth - Mud Volcanoes, Pâclele Mari, România THE STRANGE PHENOMENON OF MUD VOLCANOES – ROMANIA’S LUNAR LANDSCAPE 4K Footage filmed with DJI Mavic Air drone.
Mud Volcano, The Berca Mud Volcanoes (Vulcanii Noroioși de la Pâclele Mici) is a geological and botanical reservation located in Scorțoasa commune close to Berca in Buzău County in Romania. Its most spectacular feature is the mud volcanoes, small volcano-shaped structures typically a few metres high caused by the eruption of mud and natural gases.
As the gases erupt from 3000 metres deep towards the surface, through the underground layers of clay and water, they push up underground salty water and mud, so that they overflow through the mouths of the volcanoes, while the gas emerges as bubbles. The mud dries off at the surface, creating a relatively solid conical structure resembling a real volcano. The mud expelled by them is cold, as it comes from inside the Earth's continental crust layers, and not from the mantle.
The reservation is unique in Romania. Elsewhere in Europe, similar phenomena can be observed in Italy (northern Apennines and Sicily), Ukraine (in the Kerch Peninsula), Russia (in the Taman Peninsula) as well as Azerbaijan.
The Muddy Volcanoes in Buzau county are not the volcanoes you would expect. They're not the big, real volcanoes that scare off people and clog the European airspace with volcanic ash. Not by far. But they're a pretty amazing place, hidden somewhere in the Buzau mountains.
The Muddy Volcanoes were formed from the gas which comes from 3,000 meters underground. The gas goes through a clay sector, then through the underground water. So the gas pushes the water and the clay to the surface (which by that time become mud), creating small cones which resemble the shape of a volcano.
In light of recent, mud volcanoes would have played an important role in the emergence of life on our planet. Or even on other planets. Research studies published by NASA in 2010 show that mud volcanoes also manifest themselves as a cosmic phenomenon. In NASA’s photos made with the 2001 Mars Odyssey Space Robot, the specialists identified on Mars formations very similar to earthly mud volcanoes. So, we could say that the mud volcanoes are not only similar to a lunar landscape, but also similar to Mars.
Mud volcanoes are not rare on Earth. Several thousands of mud volcanoes have been identified in about 40 regions. Only 10% are visible, being in continental areas, the rest are found under water. In Azerbaijan and in the Caspian region there are some of the largest ones, with cones having a diameter of 1-2 kilometers and depths of up to 600 meters. By comparison, the Romanian mud volcanoes are dwarfs, but, paradoxically, maybe this is to their advantage: you don’t have to travel to remote or isolated areas to see them. North of Buzau, on a road that passes through a pleasant landscape, you can reach within a couple of hours the area of the mud volcanoes.
There’s something bizarre and comical about large mud bubbles forming and popping, the earth’s natural gas erupting up through salty, underground water and mud. The gray, thick clay-like mud dries, creating conical volcano shapes, and spew out surprisingly colorful mud bubbles that display an array of earth tone browns and ochres. Mud Volcanoes are very rare in Europe, making the Berca location a curious tourist spot and a must-see for photographers looking for unusual scenery. The lack of vegetation adds to the surreal landscape, but is unsurprising. What could possibly live in this unfriendly, salt-saturated environment?
There are a few formidable little flora called halophyte plants, which won’t be thwarted by a little mud and salt. Nitraria schoberi and Obione verrucifera are two salt-tolerant shrubs that thrive in this otherwise inhospitable soil, thriving in salinity as only 2% of the plant world can. Sheltering these hardy plants is one of the main reasons the mud volcanoes was declared a natural reserve, and is now legally protected.
