6 ideas to time short trades. Timing a longer term short trade thesis. You have a thesis for a longer term shorting opportunity for say, an individual stock. You think the company is overvalued or the company is in impending trouble. Putting technicals aside, how can we time it? There are basically two types of shorts scenarios

Profiting From Down Movements: Short Selling
- Market is just chugging up and you believe it is a short - very dangerous to get involved in it. It is better to wait until the uptrend has stopped.
- Know when to get out. If you're in a short position and you get negative news on the stock but the stock then goes up in the next few days, then consider getting out.
- Wait for Catalyst confirmations
- Consider 'dip buyers' - always look at the bullish argument. Why is the stock a good buy if it drops to this level?
